Three Gigabytes WordPress.com

Looks like the login page to WordPress.com is not the only thing that has changed over last week. They also add three gigabytes of upload space for every blog on WordPress.com. For free. To think that before this we only have 50 megabytes, this is more like having GMail on WordPress. Thanks, Matt!

James Lao writes about his WP Tag Manager: “One of the things that puzzled me about WordPress 2.3 is that it didn’t come with a tag manager. Then I realized they probably wanted to see what plugin developers would come up with first. Well, after looking around at some tag manager plugins, I decided to write my own.” When I installed WordPress 2.3 with the integrated tag I was also looking for how to manage the tags. And I found none. So I search in Google and I found this plugin. It works for now but I hope it can be improved later. Thanks, James!

Vi.sualize.us on WordPress

If you’re wondering what Vi.sualize.us is, here’s a quote from their about page:

vi.sualize.us is a social bookmarking website for visual contents — vi.sualize.us (read visualize us) allows you to remember your favorite images around the web, and share them with everyone.

Sometimes, you are looking through pictures and one of them catches your eye. You know you want to save it so you can look at it again in the future, but it’s not that easy: downloading to your hard disk is as useless as bookmarking the website in the usual way.

This is where vi.sualize.us changes the rules. Within two clicks, you can save the image reference in your account, and easily look at it whenever you want to, just as your new favorite picture deserves. All without thinking about what computer you stored it in: always online, always available.

Now, I’ve been using it myself for a while now and I think it’s good. Now I can bookmark my favourite images and share it with my friends. But what if I want to share it on my blog? As far as I know, there’s no vi.sualize.us plugin or widget (for WordPress) yet.

Fortunately, Victor Espigares – the man behind Vi.sualize.us – reminded me about the RSS goodies. According to him the feed is similar to those of Flickr so basically any Flickr plugin or widget can also be used for Vi.sualize.us feed.

You may want to try Donncha’s Flickr widget. It works fine. But. It shows you only the thumbnails (Flickr size 75×75) and this way you can only choose one between Flickr and Vi.sualize.us. Can’t have both at the same time. Well, you can always look for another Flickr RSS plugin anyway.

If you want to have larger image size – 192×164 – you can edit the plugin yourself. Find this line:

$photo_url = str_replace( "_m.jpg", "_t.jpg", $sub[0][1] );

and replace it with:

$photo_url = str_replace( "_m.jpg", "_m.jpg", $sub[0][1] );

You can see the result on my sidebar here. If anyone interested, I’ve already “hacked” the Flickr widget. Well, 99.9% of the code was still Donncha’s Flickr widget so basically it’s the same thing and you should not use them both at the same time. If you leave the RSS URl empty, you can have the most popular bookmarked images on Vi.sualize.us.

You can download the Vi.sualize.us widget here (Rename the file from .txt to .php. Upload it into your /wp-content/plugins directory). Have fun and enjoy it. (And I’m still waiting for someone to show up with a real Vi.sualize.us plugin/widget).

Thanks to Victor for the support and to Donncha for the Flickr widget.

Code is poetry, really?

Yeah, somehow I think it is. Oh, please don’t think of it as the conventional poetry. Try to think out of the box. Code is a language of some kind, isn’t it? Then why not 🙂 And I’m not even a programmer myself LOL. The fact is “Code is Poetry” IS WordPress tagline which I missed to see it until this matter brought up. Oh Matt please don’t punish me for not noticing. So when someone wrote that another company used this same tagline, what will you do? What will WordPress guys do? And what if the other company happens to be Microsoft? 😀 That should be interesting.

Should I?

Should I move my entire archives of unimportant entries to WordPress.com? Should I make this weblog right here as my main and only weblog? So far, I’ve been thinking to buy my own host and still planning to do so. What do you think? Let me hear your story.

Why do you use WordPress?

Above all other blog engine available, why do you choose WordPress? I see lots of people making switch from other to WP and vice versa. I can think some reason. For the tech guy: oh, WP is giving me freedom to tweak anything I want. For the lazy guy: I use WP because I was too lazy to try the other. For the girlfriend: I use WP because my boyfriend use it. For Matt: I use WP because I created it (Sorry Matt, this is supposed to be a joke. But you use WP anyway, aren’t you?) For the unimportant guy: I don’t use WP because I don’t blog. Doh. Whatever it is, please write it on my comment down here. I say this should be fun. But if you think otherwise, please leave a comment also. I insist. And please don’t put a flame on anyone or other blog engine. Let keep this at the level of fun only. Who’s going to be the first?
